These are often bug hotels so I don’t see the point in using as coal unless you know it’s not harbouring weevils and other bugs. It is a useful survivalist tool so may become of use but from my point of view make sure your not destroying a bunch of bugs homes first.

During the 9th Century Britain was being overrun by Vikings. King Alfred whilst trying to escape capture took refuge in a peasant woman’s house where she asked him to look after her cakes. He managed let them burn and the woman scolded him for his failings. Supposedly he scattered them to hide the evidence and it’s here these burnt coal looking fungus on broad leaf trees get their name.

They do actually hold an ember quite well and can be used in coals place or as a tinder. The smoke is a little heavy though. Also great for marking your path/track which is extremely useful (see clip).

The name “Cramp balls” apparently, if carried, protect people from getting cramp. Not too sure the reasoning behind that one but if anyone does I’d love to know.
